cloverxclover asked: As someone who is in crochet and has experience in publishing, do you have any advice for people about how to go about professionally publishing patterns? I have original patterns I'd like to publish, but I also like a popular merchandise and I would like to approach the designer/company about publishing a crochet book of their designs in collaboration with them. Any wisdom you can give would be great (I'm sure for others as well <3) Thanks!

Hi! I’m not sure if you’re talking about publishing a book, or publishing individual patterns in magazines? I haven’t approached a company about working on something with them officially, so I’m not really sure how that would work, although, I imagine, you might have to license the rights from them, unless it’s a true collaboration and they are part of a book contract as well. My first instinct would be to try to talk to someone in their licensing or marketing department. If you’re interested in publishing patterns in magazines, I am sure those magazines have submission guidelines. If you are interested in publishing a book, I would suggest researching publishers and agents who publish and represent the kind of work you want to put out. You can do this by looking at craft books in the bookstore, or picking up writers guide like Jeff Herman’s guide to publishers and agents. Also look into how to put together a formal book proposal, as agents generally prefer to look at book proposals for non-fiction work rather than finished books. Good luck! xo
