Just wanted to say that your Christmas tree from last year inspired my kitchen tree this year! I finally have a place for all the cupcake ornaments I've been collecting for years now, if only for a month. :)

YAY!! I can’t wait to put my tree up when I get home from vacay!!!! I didn’t collect many more ornaments this year….. pink Charlie Brown tree again for me this year!

I just wanted to gush at you and say that I love all of your work and you are so freaking adorable. I crochet myself, and you inspire me to make more things that aren't amigurumi (ha ha).

Hi! Thank you so much!!! I was definitely inspired by amigurumi back in the day, but really wanted to make cute stuff that people could wear outside everyday! :D

So like...How is your boss about the "releasing" the secrets?? IS he gonna let you make a second book?! Crosses fingers!! :D

Hi! He’s not my boss, he’s my business partner :). Ultimately it’s my decision, but I appreciate his knowledge, experience, and opinion about my brands!

I adore the strawberry scarf you made and the hear buttons for seeds really set it off. where do you find such cute accents? Special stores or the internet?

I think you can sometimes find them at craft stores, but I usually end up ordering them online, either from Etsy, or other random online craft supply stores!

Dear Miss Twinkiechan, Who is that woman holding the Spank! sign in the second to last picture of your last post. I swear I've seen her on tumblr before. She's the cutest!

That’s Tavuchi, owner/designer of Spank!

Sup Twinkie, do you and Hairy ever go to the gym and if you do, I would love to see what You wear to the gym Twinks lol. I bet it's super sparkly sweat pants or something. Does Hairy wear a headband?

We have gym memberships and have gone a few times, but I have been working so hard, I’m exhausted all the time, and going to the gym will make me nauseous! I’ve actually been meaning to ask my readers what THEY wear to the gym :P. I don’t like wearing tight, form-fitting pants out in public. I bought some sweatpants, but they are too WARM! I need a work-out tutu. So basically, I look like a really gross dirty bum at the gym! Random pajama pants, old tshirts. We only wear headbands when we play badminton, cuz that’s hardcore.

what is "black friday". I'm not from the U.S. & I get the feeling it means something different in your end of the woods!!

It’s a big shopping day, the day after Thanksgiving, when lots of stores have sales :)

I just saw you mentioned in another Ask reply that you live in SF. That's awesome! Me too! It's my favorite city in the US for sure. :)

I kind of love it, too!

Nov 23, 20111 note
Dear Twinkie Chan, are you one of those crazy people that will camp out inside the store until black friday begins?!?

Neeeyope!!! Although, last year, for the first time ever, we drove around stores like Target and Kohl’s at 4am just to observe all the people lined up. It was kind of amazing. My holiday shopping is mostly done online, on Etsy, or my own handmade.

HEY TWINKIE!! Because of your crazy clothing and super cute PINK haircut, do you draw alot of attention? When you walk around town are people always looking at you? Do people ever recognize you? Merry Christmas to you and Hairy!

I don’t think my appearance is that strange in SF, but when I travel, I do realize I might look a bit different! I do get recognized from time to time, like outside a grocery store here or like at Office Depot, and oftentimes anywhere we visit, like in a museum in New York, or in the middle of the street in Dublin! For some reason, I was catching more negative heat than usual for the pink hair in Disneyland of all places. That was kind of weird! I think it’s fun when people say hi! Sometimes they are too shy and then they leave a msg on my blog or on Twitter or something. I’d probably do that, too :P. Thanks!!! Happy Holidays to you!! xo

I asked Hairy, and he was happy with his haircut. It literally took 10 minutes. It was the fastest haircut everrrrr!! Thanks for asking! :D

HI! since you suggested cascade 128 Superwash, I was wondering do they sell it at Joann's Fabric?? THank You!

Unfortunately no. It would be at specialty yarn stores and also online at various online yarn stores!

It's me again! Would you ever remake the sanrio scarf or even just a hello kitty one as a custom order? I'm a massive hello kitty/sanrio fan and that scarf was just too cute! <3

Hi! I am glad you liked it! Unfortunately, I can’t reproduce any of those : /. Sorry about that!!

Hi Twinkie Chan, I see that somebody had suggested the brand "yarn bee" for a cupcake scarf, if you ever find a good yarn to make good frosting it would be cool if you would let us know!! Thanks, Happy Holidays!

For now, I have decided to use Cascade 128 superwash. It comes in a million colors, and I like the pink. It’s not a boucle, though, so not a perfect substitute!

I posted 5 more and they already sold out again. More on the way soon!

What's your musical guilty pleasure? If you have one..

CHICAGO!!!! The band, not the musical.

Nov 17, 2011
Have you considered coloring your hair some other color? Also, did you ever see your hair glow?

I have had purple and red before. And one time a little bit of teal. I feel like blue-toned colors make my skin look green and sickly! I don’t spend a lot of time under black lights, so I haven’t seen it glow yet :)

Nov 17, 2011
This isn't really a question but with the yarn situation from your book (cupcakes) I feel the need to say... I personally didn't even notice because I hate boucle yarn. I will say that Yarn Bee makes a lovely chunky yarn that works amazingly to make swirly little cupcakes :D I thought you might like to hear someone who managed to make it through boucle yarn gate. Ps I love your book and the patterns. Please write another!

I’m glad you found an alternative that you like! I have no idea what Yarn Bee is but I am going to look it up right now :)

Have you ever thought of doing a giveaway, such as giving away some of your own pieces, not like a scarf or anything that takes alot of time and alot of yarn. Like, maybe a hair clip or something?? Anyways your amazing, my mom is crocheting your cupcake scarf! Its so cutely creative.

Hi! Yes, I have done holiday giveaways in the past. Someone else brought that up on my blog, too. I might try to sneak one in, but there’s not a lot of time before Xmas since I am leaving for a vacation soon! xo

Hey Twinks! Do you ever see something at a store, that looks similar to some of your pieces, and think "those rotten scums'' or when somebody copies you, do you call them up and report them?

I have always been really slow to point fingers, because I know that people often come up with similar ideas at the same time without ever having known each other. I found this to be the case, apparently, when I used to approach people who I strongly felt had been heavily inspired by my work. They would just say, “Oh, I’ve never heard of you,” and whether that’s the truth or not, I can’t really protect an “idea” legally, so I basically stopped contacting anyone, and I definitely don’t spend hours on the internet looking for items similar to mine. One time, someone accused me of copying them! I decided to stop frustrating myself with these situations. The negative energy just makes you feel yucky.  I just keep going forward, doing my own awesome thing! However, there have been times where online stores have stolen my pictures to sell copycats of my work, so I definitely report/approach stuff like that! It hasn’t happened for a while, though.

Hello amazing Twinkie Chan! I am in love with your Locketship crochet painting. And I'm dying to know how you did the stars on there, they seem to have this cool swirl on the inside of them. I've been playing around for two hours now and I can't figure it out! I would love you forever if you could help with my star insanity and let me in on your secret! Thank you!

Hi! There isn’t really a swirl in there. I think what you are seeing is the circle I crochet first before making the points of the star. I don’t know if that helps : /

You seem to keep crazy hours, is Hairy the same and if not how does that affect your relationship? Thankyou

He has a regular 9-5 job but he is also a night owl, so it’s not really been an issue as far as I know!

Do you have a certain way of holding your yarn when crocheting? (for tension or what not, I'm a newb)

There is more than one way to hold your yarn, and it just depends on what is comfortable for you! This is how I was taught to do it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KssolLfico

And sometimes if I’m tired of squeezing my ring and pinky fingers to create tension, I will wrap the yarn around my pointer finger twice.

Nov 15, 2011
Twinkie Chan, how do you go about making your crochet paintings? I assume you crochet a giant square to begin with, and then crochet appliques, then sew those on. But what do you mount the piece on once you're finished? And how do you mount it? I wanna start making my own, so I can put them in my college dorm next year. :D

I don’t think I’ve found a perfect solution yet, so I encourage you to play with your own ideas, too. I mount it to an actual canvas. I paint the canvas first to match. Ideally, I would sew the whole piece onto the canvas as well, but crochet is heavy…especially layered crochet, and would be prone to sagging and warping, so I also use a glue to hold large surfaces of crochet to the canvas. I normally crochet the background last. I figure out the other pieces first, and how they interlock or layer. Like with the 3 ice cream kittens on a banana boat, there is actually a slit in the background so it looks like the banana is coming out of it, so, depending on your piece, there can be some planning involved.

how long did you tattoo sleeve take :) i love it

I’m not sure! It’s not even done yet!  I’ve gone in for several 2-4 hour sessions and have never tallied it up!

Hi Twinkie! I am currently making your cupcake scarf, and I am stumped of what kind of yard to use. That cotton candy yarn is no longer being made, and I don't know what other yarn to use for the frosting. Do you recommend anything? I want it to be full like a cupcake, I mean I want it to look like your frosting. Thank u! :D

Hi! I am super bummed that they discont’d that color. I am have been searching for a good replacement, but I don’t really like the texture of other pink boucle’ yarns out there. I have been using Cascade 128 Superwash because I like the pink color it comes in, but it is more expensive than what you buy at Michael’s or JoAnn, and it’s still not a boucle/fluffy, but at least a chunky yarn. The short answer is : I have yet to find the perfect substitute.
